He's back.
Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels, who suffered a gruesome dislocated elbow against the Seattle Seahawks and missed the last four games, has been cleared for contact and will start on Sunday against the Minnesota Vikings.
Daniels returned to practice last week but was considered a long shot to play against the Denver Broncos, per head coach Dan Quinn. After being limited on Wednesday this week, he was a full participant on Thursday and Friday.
Daniels returns to an offense that is as close to full strength as it has been all season. His top three weapons at wide receiver -- Terry McLaurin, Deebo Samuel and Noah Brown -- are all expected to be on the field for the first time since Week 2. He'll also have an offensive line that is playing better now that Sam Cosmi is six games removed from returning to the starting lineup.
Although the Commanders' playoff hopes are essentially gone -- they're currently given a 1% chance since neither the Philadelphia Eagles nor Dallas Cowboys have claimed the division title yet -- the team sees the value in getting Daniels on the field with a full complement of weapons to work with. There are still five games left, and the team wants to make sure Daniels gets as many reps as possible to continue his development.
"It's important that Jayden's getting going, learning to play this position at the highest level competitively," Quinn said. "Also doing it safely. Those are reps that you develop as well. It's a skill just like throwing and processing. All those things are important."
There were never any discussions about the Commanders shutting Daniels down for the rest of the season, although the team was cautious about injury and intentional about getting as much information as possible before deciding his next steps. An MRI after the Seahawks game did not reveal any ligament damage, which ensured that surgery was not necessary. The team decided that it would rest Daniels and allow him to focus solely on his recovery and reassess the injury after the bye week.
"You've just got to try to do what's best for the player," Quinn said. "We know what we're looking to do and how we want to do it, but by no means are we careless about that. It's important not just for Jayden, but important for our entire team."
All the while, Daniels made it clear that he wanted to play if healthy.
"It's my second year in the NFL; you learn a lot of different things," Daniels said. "It wouldn't be my first time going through adversity."
Daniels has missed time this season with three injuries: two games from a sprained knee suffered against the Green Bay Packers in Week 2, two games with a hamstring injury suffered against the Dallas Cowboys, and four games from the dislocated elbow.
In six games this season, Daniels has completed 62.5% of his passes for 1,184 yards with eight touchdowns and two interceptions as well as 54 carries for 262 yards and two scores.
This story will be updated after the team releases its final injury report.
