Instant analysis | Commanders suffer OT loss in Madrid, 16-13

The Washington Commanders had their chances to leave Madrid with a victory.

But like other times this season, "winning time moments" -- the phrase head coach Dan Quinn has emphasized since he arrived in Washington -- continued to be a sticking point for the team as their losing streak grew to six straight.

Sunday's 16-13 overtime loss to the Miami Dolphins came some sweet mixed in with the bitter of dropping to 3-8 before the bye week. In many respects, it was the best the Commanders had looked in weeks. The defense, while not perfect, was better in Quinn's first crack at calling plays this year, coming up with two goal line stops on fourth down. Although De'Von Achane finished with 120 rushing yards, he was kept out of the end zone for just the fourth time all season. They forced two punts -- one more than in the previous two games combined.

The offense didn't start slowly, albeit with just a field goal to open the game, and at times was efficient with Marcus Mariota under center. They actually outgained the Dolphins in total yardage and rushed for 172 yards on 33 attempts. Mariota, aside from his overtime interception that essentially sealed the game for the Dolphins, had a solid day with 213 passing yards and a 44-yard run in the fourth quarter.

The play sheet will show that three plays had the most impact on Washington's chances. Matt Gay missed two field goals, one of which was a 56-yarder with the score tied at the end of regulation, and Mike Sainristil's muffed punt in the fourth quarter. However, those can still be boiled down to the Commanders being undone by struggling to consistently play complementary football and making critical plays.

The Commanders' defense bent but largely didn't break throughout the afternoon. The Dolphins got 48 yards on their first three plays before facing a second down. Javon Kinlaw and Frankie Luvu stopped Achane short on third-and-2, and a delay of game penalty on fourth down forced the Dolphins to kick a field goal.

The Commanders' offense took a more methodical approach and leaned heavily on running back Chris Rodriguez Jr., who had a career-high 15 carries for 79 yards. They responded with a 13-play, 71-yard drive but also ran into trouble closer to the end zone, as a false start from Rodriguez on fourth-and-2 from the Dolphins' 3-yard line forced Gay out for a 26-yard field goal.

The Dolphins went back up by three points when Jacob Martin sacked Tua Tagovailoa to move them back to the Commanders' 21-yard line. The Commanders got to the Dolphins' 27-yard line on their ensuing drive, but a Mariota sack on third down forced Gay out for a 51-yard attempt that went wide right.

However, the defense forced a three-and-out with another sack on Tagovailoa, this time from Jonathan Jones, and the offense marched 82 yards downfield with help from a 19-yard catch from Chris Moore and a 15-yarder from Zach Ertz. Deebo Samuel's 13-yard reception got Gay in range for a 30-yard field goal, tying it up 6-6 at halftime.

The Commanders got the ball to start the third quarter and took their first lead in a game since Week 6 by moving 59 yards in just six plays. Rodriguez converted a third-and-1 with a 12-yard gain, and Samuel capped off the drive by running through multiple Dolphins defenders at the goal line for the 20-yard score to make the score 13-6.

The Dolphins responded by moving all the way to inside the Commanders' 5-yard line but couldn't punch it in. Bobby Wagner, who tied London Fletcher for the most consecutive 100-tackle seasons all-time earlier in the game, dove to deflect a pass from Tagovailoa to Jaylen Waddle in the end zone to force a turnover on downs.

The Commanders didn't do much with the opportunity, though, and were forced to punt the ball back to Miami six plays later. This time, the Dolphins did find the end zone with a one-yard run from Ollie Gordon to tie the score.

Now it was Washington's turn to come up empty-handed in the red zone. Jeremy McNichols moved the Commanders to the 1-yard line on a three-yard run, but both of Washington's attempts at crossing the goal line were stalled by Miami. Mariota looked for Ertz in the end zone, but the tight end slipped before he could finish his route.

The Commanders needed a stop from their defense, and the unit supplied them with not one, but two late in the fourth quarter. The first came after Washington's turnover on downs, when Von Miller corralled Tagovailoa for a six-yard loss on third down. Then, when Sainristil muffed the punt and gave Miami the ball back at Washington's 42, they took down Gordon for a two-yard loss at the 1-yard line and gave the offense 1:41 to score the game-winning points.

The Commanders got the Dolphins' 38-yard line before running Gay out for a 56-yard attempt. This was wide right a second time, and the Dolphins were content to let the clock run out to force overtime.

The Commanders got the ball first but only had it for one play, as Jack Jones intercepted Mariota's pass intended for Ertz and returned it to the Commanders' 33-yard line.

From there, all the Dolphins needed to do was run out the clock a bit and get kicker Riley Patterson close enough for a game-winning 29-yard field goal.
