After every game Tom Brady calls as the lead color commentator for NFL on FOX, he awards the LFG Player of the Game "to that one player who makes me say, 'Let's f*ing go!'"
This week's LFG winner was none other than Washington Commanders running back Jacory "Bill" Croskey-Merritt. Following the Commanders' 27-10 win over the Los Angeles Chargers, Brady chatted with the rookie about his breakout performance.
As Brady pointed out, the seventh-round pick rushed for a career-high 111 yards on 14 carries for two touchdowns, which doesn't even count the two receptions Croskey-Merritt also had in the backfield to bring his Week 5 total to 150 all-purpose yards.
"It definitely gives me a lot of confidence," Croskey-Merritt told Brady. "I want to say thanks to God, my teammates, my family for just being with me the whole way, so it definitely gives me a lot of confidence."
Per Washington Commanders Public Relations, Croskey-Merritt joins Darrell Young (2013), John Riggins (1983) and George Rogers (1986) as the only Washington players to record multiple rushing touchdowns in a single game against the Chargers.
"I'm so thankful for this organization for believing in me, for trusting me, and I'm so thankful and just excited to be here," Croskey-Merritt told Brady, holding up the silver football-shaped LFG Player of the Game award.
Since Austin Ekeler's Week 2 Achilles injury, Croskey-Merritt has gradually become a more important piece for the offense. On Sunday afternoon, he played 28 snaps and had 16 touches as the most productive skill player for the Commanders. Notching his fourth rushing touchdown of the season, Croskey-Merritt currently leads all rookie offensive players in the category; he currently ranks third among all rookies in rushing yards (283) and leads all running backs with at least 40 attempts in yards per carry (6.6).
For all the success Croskey-Merritt has had through the first quarter of his inaugural NFL season, he acknowledged he's still learning. A fourth quarter fumble on a handoff -- the one stain on Croskey-Merritt's stat sheet -- is evidence of just that.
And hearing chants of "Bill" -- Croskey-Merritt's childhood nickname -- from Commanders' fans in the stands reminds him of the support he has and pushes him toward continued improvement.
"I definitely hear them, and I love it," Croskey-Merritt said of the chants. "I'm so thankful that they support me and it just makes me want to give my all to them."
Next week against the Chicago Bears for Monday Night Football, Croskey-Merritt has the opportunity to follow up his LFG performance in front of fans with another show at Northwest Stadium.
