Sainristil is Get Loud's training camp trailblazer

Analysts Michael Jenkins and Fred Smoot chose their training camp trailblazers in this week's episode of Get Loud. It wasn't a difficult choice for Jenkins to go with cornerback Mike Sainristil considering how he's been showing out during training camp.

"When Nick Saban gets on TV and says, 'pound-for-pound, this is the best player of the draft,' you might want to listen," Smoot said.

Sainristil was a crucial part of the defense throughout his first season with the Commanders as a versatile weapon for defensive coordinator Joe Whitt Jr.'s scheme. In his rookie season with the Commanders, Sainristil led the defense in pass breakups and interceptions. He also has been a playmaker throughout training camp with at least two interceptions which has helped bring attention to the exciting upgrades made to Whitt's secondary.

However, with that success, Sainristil is going to have big expectations on him for his sophomore season as the secondary continues to develop.

"When you talk changing the narrative, the secondary had some issues," Jenkins said. "But now with the talent they have back there where we've got a healthy Marshon Lattimore, we're talking narratives that could change in a big way."

The narrative is in fact changing with the knowledge that having more versatile players throughout the secondary will enable Whit to give the defensive back room more opportunities to allow players to play to their strengths.

"[Sainristil] is going to be able to go back to a position he's very comfortable in, and that's inside at the nickel," Smoot added. "When people get in their right position, that changes everything."

Regardless of where Sainristil is going to end up within Whitt's defense, he'll be an exciting player to watch as he continues to trailblaze as a player and weapon in Washington's secondary.
