Art Modell, former owner of the Cleveland Browns and Baltimore Ravens, passed away this morning at age 87.

The Washington Redskins have released the following statement, with sympathies to his family:

"Our thoughts and prayers go out to Art Modell's family, as he will be missed dearly by the Redskins organization and National Football League."

Head coach Mike Shanahan offered his own condolences at this afternoon's media briefing:

"I had a chance to be around him a little bit with all the times we played Cleveland when I was in Denver, so I had a chance to get to know him pretty well. I always liked him.

"He was a first class guy who always treated me well and always had time to sit down and talk.  When you're an assistant football coach, not many owners do that, so I consider him a friend."
