Smoot: Dorance Armstrong 'gets after the passer relentlessly'

"Get Loud" podcast hosts Fred Smoot and Michael Jenkins raved about the contributions that Washington Commanders defensive end Dorance Armstrong's has made to Washington's defense throughout the season.

"Nobody gives him [Armstrong] respect," Smoot said. "He gets after the passer relentlessly all the time. At one point, we're going to have to give this man his props."

Leading the team in sacks this season, Armstrong made an impact in the Week 5 matchup against the Los Angeles Chargers with two sacks on quarterback Justin Herbert. He's in his eighth season in the league and second with Washington.

"This guy, he's a top-tier pass rusher. He's starting to be that," Smoot said.

Armstrong currently ranks in the top five in the NFL for sacks. He's tied for second among names like New York Giants linebacker Brian Burns and New Orleans Saints defensive end Josh Sweat.

"[He] wasn't a popular guy at first because he played on a team with Micah Parsons and [DeMarcus Lawrence] and the rest of the guys that got all the love," Smoot said.

However, despite Smoot's dissatisfaction with Armstrong's popularity, Armstrong has continued to put up numbers for Washington's defensive front, which was reinforced during the offseason with additions of Javon Kinlaw and Deatrich Wise Jr. to the front four. Wise suffered a season-ending injury in Week 2, but Wise has stepped up even further with 18 total pressures, according to Pro Football Focus.

The Commanders tied their season-high in sacks against the Raiders with five sacks last week and currently enter Week 6 tied for third in the league in sacks.

"Sooner or later, you're going to have to give this guy some love in a division that has Abdul Carter, [Kayvon] Thibodeaux, and [Brian] Burns," Smoot said.

So far this season, Armstrong has 22 combined tackles, 15 solo tackles, five sacks, and seven tackles for loss.
