Training camp notebook | Commanders begin final week of work before roster cuts

The Washington Commanders have begun their final week of practice before final roster cuts, which they have emphasized as the most important week of work they'll get before the regular season. Let's take a look at some of the top quotes and highlights.

-- First, let's discuss why the Commanders had practice today, because that was not the case as of two days ago. Head coach Dan Quinn said that after looking at their schedule between now and the preseason finale against the Baltimore Ravens, he and the staff felt like it was a good opportunity to get some extra work in so they could keep evaluating their roster. Although he didn't like some of what he saw during the Commanders' loss to the Detroit Lions last weekend, the extra practice wasn't a "knee-jerk reaction" from the staff. Rather, with some new players moving around to different positions, Quinn thought it was important for those players to get more reps.

-- We have some more injury updates. Quinn confirmed that both Tim Settle Jr. and Rachaad White would be on the field, albeit in a limited capacity. There is a long list of players on the roster still dealing with injuries, and Quinn said that they will all continue their rehab process with most of them shooting for next week to be available. Although he didn't say it outright, it seems that key players like Odafe Oweh, K'Lavon Chaisson and Nick Allegretti will not be available for the team's joint practice with the Baltimore Ravens on Wednesday.

-- The safety position has featured some heated competitions over the past month, and Quan Martin has certainly given himself an advantage with two interceptions in as many preseason games. "To see Quan express himself over the last two games and a number of practices, you can feel his comfort level in the system coming together," Quinn said. "He's been such a selfless teammate, so it's not surprising to see him put the work in and seeing the rewards from that."

-- The Commanders were only on the field for about an hour with limited 11-on-11 periods, but there were some highlight plays from the action. Stefon Diggs, still wearing No. 3, had a sliding catch working with Jayden Daniels during seven-on-seven drills. Robert Henry Jr. and Kaytron Allen got most of the work with Jacory Croskey-Merritt and White out, and both players had some positive runs. During two-minute drills, the defense kept the offense out of the end zone with Amik Robertson and Fabian Moreau working together to break up a pass intended for Terry McLaurin.

-- When asked about whether the team has the talent at center the team needs, here's what Quinn had to say:

"We do, but we still have work to do there, honestly, so I want to see where Matt [Gulbin] is and get him some more snaps. He played a little guard this week, and we worked him some there in the game. We'll work him back to exclusively at center into this game and this practice this week. We're still working with Nick [Allegretti]. He's not there yet coming back from his injury. But between the three of them, we're still in the process of evaluating what's the best way for us to go."

-- Quinn reiterated that having the joint practice with the Ravens is "a big deal for us." That is where the Commanders are hoping to get the most work possible for Daniels as he continues to get acclimated to the offense. Although all the players are expected to get work, Quinn said the focus will be "shifted" more towards the starters and those who are likely to sit out the finale. The Commanders didn't have their second joint practice last year, and with a little more than two weeks before the regular season, it will be a good look at how the team stacks up against a quality team with high expectations.
