Question of the week: Why should a top-tier DC coach for Washington?

The Washington Commanders are on the hunt for a new defensive coordinator after relieving Joe Whitt Jr. of his duties earlier this month. There are several candidates on the market with multiple teams competing against each other, but analysts Logan Paulsen, Fred Smoot and Santana Moss believe the Commanders are an attractive destination for some of the best defensive minds in the league.

Here's what each of them said in this week's episode of the "Command Center" podcast on why a potential defensive coordinator should want to be in the DMV.

Smoot: What makes it attractive? I'm gonna sprinkle in some young talent mixed with a couple of yellow jackets. So I got education and I got some young youth in this room. I got a mountain of a wall between my two defensive tackles, and guess what? All the people that got hurt during the year? They're back. So I got most of my starters back. And not only do I have most of my starters back, the guys that filled in for my starters now have starters' time under their belt. How deep am I really at safety? How deep am I really at edge? I have guys galore. That's gonna be the hardest thing about this roster; who to bring back and who not to bring back considering some guys stepped up and played some great football while some guys were down. So I got a mixture of everything I need, and between the draft and free agency, a couple of tweaks here and there, I could have a top defense in the league.

Moss: I think there are two things to me. The first thing is Jayden Daniels. As a defensive coordinator, I want a quarterback. I want to come to a team where I have a quarterback that's probably gonna make my defense that much more comfortable. He's gonna always have us in a position to go out there and say, 'Hey, now it's time to take over the game. This guy's done enough. He's put us in a great situation by scoring the ball, running the ball, doing the things that he does special. Now we just got to go out there and do what we do.' ... The other thing is Dan Quinn. Dan Quinn is the type of coach that I would love to coach under, especially knowing that he's a defensive mind. Our minds together will make us that much greater. Two defensive coordinator minds on the same team. If Dan Quinn has already shown you that his style of play has proven to win, bring what you can add to make us that much better.

Paulsen: I think Dan Quinn is really appealing; I think Adam Peters is really appealing. Fred, you did a good job of outlining the roster defensively, and there's a lot of areas to improve. I think there are some pieces you feel good about in terms of developmental roles. But you're gonna get an investment from Adam Peters. There's no better person, at least to my eye right now, that does a better job of finding pieces that fit schematically what you're looking for. So, he's gonna go out there and say, 'Let's go get a defensive tackle.' He's gonna find somebody in free agency. 'We need a defensive end and pass-rusher.' He's gonna find someone in the draft. We're gonna piecemeal this thing together to get that roster on the defensive side of the football significantly better. So those are the things that if I'm a D.C., I know I'm gonna get support from the head coach. I know I'm gonna get support from the personnel department. And I think those things are really important for long-term success.
