London Fletcher 'thrilled' Commanders, McLaurin agreed to extension

The Washington Commanders and wide receiver Terry McLaurin came to an agreement on a contract extension, and like the fan base, former linebacker London Fletcher is "thrilled" with the news.

"I had confidence that they would be able to come to an agreement," Fletcher said on the most recent episode of "The Booth Review." "I'm stoked for it and happy to see 17 back out on the field."

Now, the focus for the organization will shift to getting McLaurin, who dealt with an ankle issue throughout camp, back up to speed and ready for the season opener against the New York Giants.

McLaurin was recently activated off the Physically Unable to Perform list, meaning that the Commanders are confident enough in his health that they want to start his "return to play" process. The team prefers to take a slower, more methodical approach to getting their players back on the field. The steps players need to take are catered to their specific needs, but all follow the general path of going through rehab before moving on to conditioning and then joining their teammates in practice.

McLaurin concluded his rehab last week and has begun the conditioning process, according to head coach Dan Quinn. He does not have a specific date circled for McLaurin's return, but the process he has been on presents an opportunity for McLaurin to be ready for Week 1 in less than two weeks.

Part of the process for when McLaurin does get on the field will be for him to get back in sync with quarterback Jayden Daniels and the rest of the Commanders' offense. Neither Fletcher nor co-host and Commanders' play-by-play announcer Bram Weinstein have concerns about whether McLaurin can get up to speed.

"I'm not worried about him being in shape," Weinstein said. "I'm not worried about him being in the meetings and engaged and all that stuff."

Still, McLaurin's absence does raise questions about how many snaps he will get to start the season. Fletcher believes there could be an adjustment period and said there will "probably" be a difference in his snap volume in Week 3 compared to Week 1, but given the team's track record of getting players healthy, he believes the Commanders will handle it the right way.

And no matter how many snaps he gets to start the season, Fletcher and Weinstein are confident McLaurin will make an impact.

"He makes such a big difference, having his presence on the football field," Fletcher said.
