Training camp notebook | Gold team dominates in intrasquad scrimmage

The big day finally arrived Tuesday morning, as the Washington Commanders held their intrasquad scrimmage between the Burgundy and Gold teams. Let's dive into the big takeaways from the action.

  • Sam Hartman, who started for the Gold team, had the most consistent day of the quarterbacks. He was crisp, accurate and ran the second string offense on two scoring drives. He even scrambled in a score to put his team up 14-0 (the Commanders separated practice into two quarters). His best throw went to running back Demetric Felton, who completed the pass on fourth down and put the offense in scoring position.
  • Brian Johnson was the Gold team's offensive coordinator, and he was in his bag of tricks in the first quarter of play. With the offense in the red zone, he called a play that featured tight end Colson Yankoff flipping a completed pass from Hartman back to Kazmeir Allen to get inside the 5-yard line.
  • Washington's Gold team running backs had plenty of room to run throughout the morning. Running back Chris Rodriguez Jr. scored the first touchdown of the day on a power option to the left. Hartman pitched it out to the former sixth-round pick, who ran in untouched.
  • The Gold team's defense made life difficult for Jayden Daniels and the Burgundy team's offense. They recorded three sacks on the day, including two on Daniels' final drive of the first quarter, but they also put pressure on Daniels to get the ball out quickly. Bobby Wagner got in Daniels' face to force an overthrow to Deebo Samuel, who was wide open and likely would have scored had the pass been on target. Von Miller also forced a pressure that resulted in a drop from Zach Ertz on fourth down.
  • Cornerback Mike Sainristil was also all over the field to start the day with two pass breakups on passes intended for Samuel and K.J. Osborn.
  • The Burgundy team's best day came at the start of the second quarter of play. Tyler Biadasz cleared the way for Brian Robinson Jr. on a screen that drew the offense closer to midfield. Osborn hauled in an explosive pass from Daniels, giving the Burgundy team its best field position of the day. However, Daniels threw three incompletions on his final four throws. His final throw of the day to Michael Gallup was short of the first down.
  • Linebacker Duke Riley, who was signed to the team earlier this week, made his presence felt in the first quarter. He sniffed out a screen to Rodriguez and forced an incompletion with the hit.
  • Rookie cornerback Trey Amos had one of the best defensive plays of the day. Daniels had Gallup open near the right sideline, but Amos came in at the last second and batted the ball away. It seems like the game is starting to slow down, as he also had a strong preseason performance against the New England Patriots.
  • Nine players did not participate in the action today: linebacker Jordan Magee; cornerbacks Jonathan Jones and Bobby Price; defensive end Javontae Jean-Baptiste; wide receivers Noah Brown and Terry McLaurin; quarterback Marcus Mariota; and guards Brandon Coleman and Sam Cosmi. There were no major updates on when they would return to the field.
  • Offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury and defensive coordinator Joe Whitt Jr. were the head coaches for the Burgundy and Gold teams, respectively. Here's what Quinn had to say about the head coach qualities he sees from Whitt.
    • "Very clear on expectations. He's very clear on identity and how to do things. He's very organized, very detailed. Those are big parts of the job when you're putting the whole group together – identity and standards and no grey about how you want to do things. For Joe, growing up as a coach's kid...he's very clear on standards and expectations. I think that carries over to your team."
