What to know about Washington's place in waiver wire

08062025 WAS @ NE Joint Practice KC10590

The Washington Commanders are done carving out their initial 53-man roster, but they aren't done shaping the team before their Week 1 debut against the New York Giants.

Hundreds of players are now up for grabs on the waiver wire, and the Commanders will have a chance to claim some of them to improve the bottom of their roster. Here are some things to keep in mind over the next few hours.

Where do the Commanders sit in the waiver order?

The Commanders are 29th in the waiver wire this year -- a drastic shift from the No. 2 spot they had in 2024. They will remain in that spot for the first three weeks of the season, after which the order will revert to the current NFL standings each week.

When is the deadline?

The Commanders must make any waiver claims by noon ET on Aug. 27 (today). They are not guaranteed to be successful in their claims, as a team higher in the waiver order will be awarded the player. All waiver claims will be revealed to the teams at 1p.m. ET.

What is the difference between being waived an released?

Any player who has not accrued four NFL season can be subject to the waiver wire. The requirements for an accrued season include being on a team's active roster, inactive live, Reserve/Injured list or Physically Unable to Perform list for at least six games. Players on the practice squad are not eligible for an accrued season.
