The Washington Commanders selected defensive tackle Phidarian Mathis in the second round (No. 47 overall) of the 2022 NFL Draft.
Mathis (6-4, 312) is the third defensive lineman taken by Washington out of the University of Alabama in franchise history. The other two, DT Jonathan Allen and DT Daron Payne, are both currently on Washington's roster.
Mathis is the 504th selection made by Washington in the Common Draft era (since 1967) and the 58th second round selection made by the team since the institution of the draft in 1936.
Mathis played in 55 games at the University of Alabama from 2018-21 and recorded 129 tackles (53 solo), 10.5 sacks, 17.5 tackles for loss, five passes defensed, three forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries.
As a senior in 2021, Mathis was named a Reese's Senior Bowl All-American and was named All-SEC Second Team after recording 53 tackles (20 solo), 9.0 sacks and 12 tackles for loss.
As a junior, Mathis played in 13 games and recorded 31 tackles (16 solo), 1.5 sacks and five tackles for loss. He returned two punts for 39 yards (19.5 average) with a long return of 30 yards and ranked No. 5 in the Big Ten and No. 34 in the nation in yards per reception (18.07).
Mathis is the 26th Alabama player drafted by Washington and the first since guard Ross Pierschbacher was selected in 2019. He is the ninth Alabama player to be drafted by Washington within the first two rounds and first since the team selected Payne in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft. Washington has selected a defensive lineman within the first two rounds in four of the last five NFL Drafts.
A native of Wisner, La., Mathis attended Neville High School in Monroe, Louisiana and was named All-State honors from the Louisiana Sports Writers Association (LSWA) in Class 4A as well as All-District 2-4A accolades.
